The reason many people in the United States are obese is complex. The most commonly known and accepted reason people become obese is eating too many calories and exercising too little. With super-size this and super-size that, people can often overeat without giving it any thought. Those who do give it thought are subject to misinformation when buying diet products. Sugar and fabricated chemicals known as natural flavors, food additives, and flavor enhancers contribute to obesity.
In a letter to the editor of the New York Times, Dr. Fatima Stanford attempted to shed some light on factors apart from overeating and lack of exercise that lead to obesity when she wrote, “I applaud the recent decision by the American Medical Association to acknowledge obesity as a disease. As an obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, I have dedicated my career to helping patients struggling with their weight.

Because the consensus is that about 99% of the time, obesity stems from overeating, those who do not suffer from obesity often fail to realize that there are a number of other factors that lead to its classification as a disease. This ill-informed view allows society as a whole, to ridicule the obese privately, if not publicly.
