Who Can Define Love?
A Bio-Relational Framework for Differentiating Familial, Platonic, and Romantic Attachment
Abstract
The question of who can define love is deceptively simple because love is not a singular phenomenon but a family of related attachment experiences. This article argues that love can be defined through a bio-relational framework that distinguishes among familial, platonic, universal, and romantic forms of attachment. Drawing on neuroscience, attachment theory, and evolutionary relationship research, the article shows that romantic love is especially characterized by the interaction of lust, attraction, and attachment, supported by neuroendocrine systems involving dopamine, oxytocin, vasopressin, and related reward pathways (Gibson, 2023; Roy et al., 2025; Seshadri et al., 2016; Schneiderman et al., 2012). Familial and platonic love, by contrast, are more closely associated with safety, duty, friendship, cooperation, and enduring attachment without necessarily involving erotic desire. The article argues that love is best understood not merely as a feeling but as an organizing force that becomes visible in patterns of care, reciprocity, loyalty, and attachment regulation. Introduction
The question “Who can define love?” is philosophically interesting because love is one of the most frequently used words in human language and one of the least consistently defined. People use it to describe family, friendship, spiritual compassion, romance, and even idealized loyalty, yet these experiences are not identical. A serious discussion of love therefore requires more precision than casual language usually provides.
From a bio-relational perspective, love is not a single emotion. It is a broad organizing force that takes different forms depending on the type of bond involved. Familial love supports kinship, protection, and instinctive care. Platonic love supports friendship, cooperation, and shared values. Universal love involves empathy and compassion for humanity. Romantic love, however, is distinct because it engages attraction, desire, bonding, and attachment systems that are biologically and psychologically specialized (Gibson, 2023; Roy et al., 2025; Seshadri et al., 2016).
This article argues that love can be defined by those who study it carefully, but it is best understood through a framework that distinguishes its major forms. The question is not whether love can be defined at all. The question is whether we are defining the right kind of love for the context in which it is being used.
Conceptual Framework
Bio-relational science treats love as an energy-like organizing force that becomes embodied through biological and interpersonal systems. Neuroscience research indicates that romantic love involves a set of brain processes associated with reward, motivation, and attachment, especially within systems involving dopamine, oxytocin, and vasopressin (Gibson, 2023; Roy et al., 2025; Seshadri et al., 2016). These systems are not identical to those involved in friendship or kinship, although they overlap.
Romantic love, in particular, has been conceptualized as involving lust, attraction, and attachment as partially distinct but interconnected processes (Roy et al., 2025; Seshadri et al., 2016). Lust refers to sexual desire; attraction refers to the focused pull toward a particular person; attachment refers to the bond that supports longing, closeness, and often exclusivity. This distinction helps explain why not all expressions of love feel the same or serve the same function.
Family and platonic relationships depend more heavily on safety, trust, loyalty, shared history, and mutual regard. These forms of love are profound, but they do not require the same erotic and pair-bonding systems that romantic love does. In that sense, the biological architecture of romantic love is more specialized, which is why misunderstandings about it can produce so much confusion and pain.

Familial love
Familial love is often the earliest form of love a person experiences. It is rooted in kinship, caregiving, obligation, and protective instinct. In healthy families, this form of love provides stability, belonging, and an early template for trust. It may be unconditional in a practical sense, meaning it is not usually contingent on romantic desire or mutual selection.
Familial love matters because it teaches the nervous system that connection can be safe. At its best, it creates a baseline of security from which later relationships develop. At its worst, it can also transmit conditionality, secrecy, or relational injury. Even so, the category itself is distinct from romantic bonding.
Platonic love
Platonic love is the love of deep friendship, mutual respect, and shared values. It is often cooperative rather than erotic, and enduring rather than intensely possessive. Platonic bonds can be among the most reliable and life-giving relationships people experience, precisely because they are not driven by sexual urgency or romantic idealization.
This kind of love deserves its own definition because people sometimes mistake friendship for a lesser form of love. In reality, platonic love is often one of the most stable and mature forms of attachment. It can support emotional health, personal growth, and long-term relational support without requiring the risks of romantic entanglement.
Universal love
Universal love refers to compassion, empathy, and goodwill extended toward humanity as a whole. It is broader than personal attachment and is often associated with moral, spiritual, or humanitarian concern. This form of love can motivate generosity, forgiveness, and service.
Universal love differs from romantic love in that it is not focused on selecting one person as a partner. Instead, it expresses care across a wider field of human concern. It is therefore less about exclusive attachment and more about expansive regard.
Romantic love
Romantic love is the most biologically complex of the major forms of love discussed here. It combines desire, attraction, attachment, reward, and often the wish for exclusivity or life partnership. Research suggests that romantic love involves distinct neural processes and neuroendocrine pathways, including the integration of reward circuitry with bonding systems (Gibson, 2023; Roy et al., 2025; Seshadri et al., 2016).
Oxytocin and vasopressin are particularly relevant because they contribute to bonding, trust, selective attachment, and relationship maintenance (Carter, 2017; Schneiderman et al., 2012). Dopamine supports the motivational and rewarding aspects of attraction. Together, these processes help explain why romantic love often feels powerful, singular, and difficult to fake.
This is also why romantic love is so often misunderstood. People may confuse arousal with love, dependency with love, or familiarity with love. But romantic love is not merely intensity. It is a patterned state in which desire and attachment begin to organize around a particular person.
Why definition matters
Love is often discussed as though it were self-evident, but poor definitions produce poor decisions. If people assume that all love is the same, they may bring the wrong expectations into the wrong relationship. A woman may mistake a man’s charm for romantic attachment, or a man may mistake family loyalty for romantic readiness. The result is confusion about what is being offered and what is being received.
The bio-relational framework helps clarify this by emphasizing that love has both emotional and biological signatures. What love looks like in action may differ depending on whether it is familial, platonic, universal, or romantic. Recognizing those differences is essential for relational health.
Implications for Women’s Wellness and Relational Education
Women’s wellness education benefits from clear language about love because emotional confusion often leads to relational vulnerability. When women are taught to collapse all forms of love into one vague category, they may overlook the differences between safety, friendship, attraction, and pair bonding. A more accurate vocabulary helps women make better decisions about whom to trust, whom to bond with, and what kind of relationship is actually forming.
This is particularly important in romantic contexts, where the stakes are high. A woman may feel cared for by someone who is offering friendship but not commitment, or attraction without attachment, or support without exclusivity. Clear definitions help reduce the chance that she will treat one form of connection as though it were another.
For educators and clinicians, the implication is that love education should include distinctions among types of love as part of emotional literacy. For women themselves, the implication is that defining love correctly can reduce confusion and increase discernment. When love is named accurately, it becomes easier to recognize whether a relationship is genuinely healthy.
Conclusion
Who can define love? In a broad sense, anyone can attempt a definition. In a more serious sense, love is best defined by those who examine its forms, patterns, and biological underpinnings carefully. Familial love, platonic love, universal love, and romantic love are related but not interchangeable.
Romantic love, in particular, is a distinct neurobiological and relational state that engages attraction, bonding, and attachment. It is not simply a feeling, nor is it the same as friendship or kinship. A bio-relational framework helps clarify this complexity by showing that love is both an organizing force and a lived experience.
For women’s wellness and relational education, that clarity matters. When love is defined well, it can be recognized more accurately, trusted more wisely, and lived more intentionally.
